With the failure to match reps early in the week on bench press and today’s workout that felt much harder, I’m tempted to cut the mesocycle short by 1 week and go into my deload next week. I am conflicted though. Most body parts feel pretty good with just chest giving me signs I’ve hit my MRV. I haven’t had overlapping soreness but I do feel like performance is taking a hit after last week.
Last week I had 19 sets for chest and fell shy by two reps on the first set of flat bench press this week. Not only was it 2 reps shy, but it was two reps shy with actually going to failure. I had to set the bar down on the safety rails to get out from under. While I did match reps on flat bench press today, it was definitely a 1 or 0 RiR. By the end of the chest part of the workout, my pecs were screaming.
My thought is to end this accumulation phase and go into a deload next week. Then for the hypertrophy 2 meso keep chest volume the same, start at 13 sets and work up to 18 or 19 over 4 weeks. For back, I’ll start a couple sets higher in volume, so 15, and let volume increase normally to get to 22 sets over the 4 weeks.
