How I built my raised garden beds

Or “That’s not much of a rest day.”

There is more to a nourishing pursuit than diet and exercise. Health and fitness are an important component, but there is more to life. Another component is taking part in activities that you enjoy and feel passionate about and if those can stimulate your mind, even better.

Gardening has been something I’ve done for a long time. Some years I have more time and resources to commit to it than others. Last year was a poor year and the harvest reflected that. This year, things are different. With the COVID-19 crisis closing down businesses, I have more time available to do a proper job in the garden. With the federal stimulus, I actually have a bit of extra money. I invested part of that to buy materials I need to properly set up my raised bed system. This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a number of years.

In this video, I give a quick overview of how to build raised beds. It was supposed to be a rest day, but there wasn’t much resting.

    For this project I had:
  • Twenty 12’x6″x1.5″ white cedar
  • Ten 8’x6″x1.5″ white cedar
  • Skil Saw
  • Square
  • 2″ screws
  • DeWalt screw gun
  • Shovel and wheelbarrow for filling the raised bed

I cut all the lumber I’ll need for the five beds. Three have been assembled with the other two waiting until I have tilled the soil where they will sit. One bed has been filled (as much as it is going to be at least) and planted. In a month we should have some salad greens and radishes. By mid-July, we should have peas.

In the training update, I go over how much the volume has gone up in the first two weeks of this mesocycle. It has increased by 32 sets and about 2 hours of training time. This increase took place even with my lowering the number of sets that could potentially be added to the program. If the rate of growth continues, I’ll likely need to split some days into a morning and afternoon session. This is especially true once business returns to normal and I am back to work in the office full time.

See you next week.
